RTS Laboratory WS 17/18

General Course Information:

Course Content

This lab will deepen the understanding of topics related to operating systems (like processes, threads, synchronization, I/O handling, etc) and real-time systems (like server algorithms, resource management, video decoding, real-time operating system, etc).
The five experiments are covered by 10 appointments.
1. Processes and Threads
2. Linux Drivers (part 1+2+3)
3. OSEK (part 1+2)
4. Resource Management (part 1+2)
5. Quality-aware Frame Skipping (part 1+2)


For each experiment, a description with fundamental basics to understand the experiment will be provided in the OLAT page (see below).

Prerequisite: C/C++/Embedded C

Registration for the lab will be open from now until 27th October, 12 a.m. Because of limited hardware resources, we will assign available places on first come first serve basis. At the end of registration period, a confirmation email will be sent to the successfully registered students. A foreseen lab schedule is available on the Downloads OLAT page.
In the beginning of each appointment, the preparation tasks of the experiment topic will be tested. Without passing the tests, the experiments cannot be started and have to be repeated. Failing a test is only possible once. After a second failed test, the entire lab is failed and can be repeated in the next winter-semester. After completing each experiment, each group (of 2) has to hand in a solution of the experiment questions in written form. At the end of the semester, students have to appear in an exam. Only after passing the exam, it will be possible for students to get a Schein for the lab.
