Abstract

In this paper we present a lean method for increased resource efficiency in real-time MPEG-2 video stream adaptation in embedded systems with limited and varying resource availability. It does not perform or modify an actual stream adaptation algorithm, rather uses a closed control loop to monitor resources and determine the operation of the adaptation algorithm. Our method prevents oscillation between over- and underutilization of resources, which can bring the system to an unstable state, with low effective resource usage. As a case study, we assume a video stream adaptation for transmission under constrained network bandwidth - the method can be applied to other resources as well. First results from a simulation study indicate the increase of effective resource usage.
